The series Disaster Houses explores sources of found photography and integrates them into new narratives. I have been appropriating old postcards and snapshots of homes that have been the victim of a disaster and stitching them onto paper in a way that also adds to the image. The imagery suggests a desire for the domestic and an urge to preserve the home or the image of the home by repurposing it. The series was inspired by personal events – a feeling of displacement brought on by moving for a temporary job opportunity and national events – the foreclosure crisis. I am interested in the emotional idea of “home” as well as what can prevent the having of the physical structure of a “home”.
